Best Heroes Tier List 2026: Every Hero Ranked

Updated for Season 5 — Who to invest in, who to skip, and why formation matters more than individual power

Best Heroes Tier List 2026

Why This Tier List Exists

Every Last War player eventually asks the same question: which heroes should I actually invest in? With 30+ heroes in the game and resources that take weeks to farm, making the wrong call hurts. This tier list cuts through the noise.

We cross-referenced five independent sources — Last War Handbook, Pocket Gamer, MedievalFun, Packsify, and community forum data — then weighted each hero’s performance across PvP, PvE, and alliance warfare. Heroes that show up in the top tier across multiple sources get our highest confidence rating. Heroes where sources disagree get flagged so you can make your own call.

The current meta (as of February 2026) heavily favors Damage Reduction as the strongest stat in competitive PvP, followed by Skill Damage and March Size. Keep that in mind as you read — heroes who provide team-wide damage reduction or survive burst phases are punching above their weight right now.

💡 PRO TIP: Formation Over Individual Power A 5-hero Tank formation is roughly 44% stronger than those same heroes in a mixed lineup. Before chasing the “best” individual hero, make sure they fit your formation. A well-built single-type team beats a squad of individually stronger heroes every time.

The Combat Triangle: How Hero Types Work

Before diving into rankings, you need to understand the counter system that drives every fight in Last War.

Last War uses a rock-paper-scissors mechanic across three vehicle types:

  • Aircraft beat Tanks (+20% damage bonus)
  • Tanks beat Missiles (+20% damage bonus)
  • Missiles beat Aircraft (+20% damage bonus)

That 20% swing is massive. It means a well-built Missile team will consistently beat an equally invested Tank team, even if the Tank heroes are individually “better.” This is why formation choice matters as much as individual hero quality.

Running five heroes of the same vehicle type grants stacking formation bonuses — up to 44% effective power compared to a mixed squad with zero bonus. The popular hybrid approach (4 same-type + Marshall as support) still yields around 35% effective power, which is strong enough for most content.

Formation TypeBonusBest For
Full 5-Type (e.g., 5 Tank)~44% powerMaximum synergy, PvE dominance
4+1 Hybrid (e.g., 4 Tank + Marshall)~35% powerCompetitive balance with support
Mixed (any combination)0% bonusFlexibility for counter-picking

Combat triangle diagram The rock-paper-scissors cycle: Aircraft → Tank → Missile → Aircraft

⚠️ WARNING: Don’t Spread Resources Across Multiple Formations Pick one formation type and commit. Trying to build Tank AND Missile AND Aircraft teams simultaneously will leave you underpowered everywhere. Master one formation completely before exploring others.

SS Tier — Meta-Defining Heroes

These heroes dominate the current meta. If you can get them, invest immediately.

Kimberly

SS Tier · Tank · Attack

The premier damage dealer in Last War. Kimberly's Energy Assault auto-attack deals 472% damage to a single target, and her Barrage Strike AoE ultimate can wipe entire squads. She's the core of every competitive Tank formation and excels in both PvP arenas and PvE zombie clearing. Her one weakness is low HP — she needs frontline protection from Williams or Murphy to survive. Every Tank player should prioritize Kimberly first. (Confidence: HIGH — top tier across all 5 sources)

Fiona

SS Tier · Missile · Attack

The highest damage Missile hero in the game. Fiona dominates PvP with devastating multi-target attacks that punish grouped enemy formations. She's the cornerstone of any Missile composition and performs strongly in PvE content as well. If you're running Missiles, Fiona is your first investment — no contest. Rated A for Stage Bosses due to her multi-target focus, but S+ everywhere else. (Confidence: HIGH — SS in Handbook, SS in Pocket Gamer, S in MedievalFun)

S Tier — Core Team Members

Excellent heroes that anchor competitive teams. Most players will build around 2-3 S-tier heroes as their foundation.

DVA

S Tier · Aircraft · Attack

The highest burst damage dealer in Last War. DVA's Vortex Missile attacks shred high-priority targets, and her 30% critical rate boost makes her devastatingly effective once she gets rolling. Her third skill transforms her into the ultimate weapon against large zombie hordes. Core pick for any Aircraft formation, and strong enough to justify a slot in hybrid lineups for boss content. (Confidence: HIGH — S-SS across all sources)

Tesla

S Tier · Missile · Attack

Energy-based damage specialist with excellent scaling into late game. Tesla's lightning attacks deal massive damage to heavily armored targets that physical damage heroes struggle against. Particularly effective in PvP where energy damage bypasses physical defense stacking. A strong second Missile DPS behind Fiona. (Confidence: HIGH — S tier in 4/5 sources)

Williams

S Tier · Tank · Defense

The definitive defensive tank. Williams' Stun Bomb auto-attack provides crowd control, his passive grants 30-45% all damage reduction to the team, and Iron Will gives team-wide defense buffs. In the current Damage Reduction meta, Williams is arguably the most valuable tank in the game — he keeps your damage dealers alive through burst phases that would otherwise wipe them. Core trio member alongside Kimberly and Murphy. (Confidence: HIGH — S in 4/5 sources)

Marshall

S Tier · Tank · Support

The only UR Support hero in Last War, making Marshall literally irreplaceable. His team-wide attack boost (6 seconds of amplified damage) turns good DPS into great DPS. The popular 4+1 hybrid formation (4 same-type heroes + Marshall) exists specifically because his support value is worth the reduced formation bonus. Every player needs Marshall eventually. (Confidence: HIGH — S across all sources, uniquely irreplaceable)

Murphy

S Tier · Tank · Defense

The best free tank in the game and often the first UR hero new players receive. Murphy reduces damage taken across the team and boosts physical damage reduction. He works best positioned in the back row to maximize his third skill's effectiveness. Reliable for long-term play — Murphy maintains value as fights extend and enemy durability increases, making him the F2P foundation hero. (Confidence: HIGH — S in 4/5 sources, universally recommended for F2P)

A Tier — Strong Specialists

Solid heroes that excel in specific roles or formations. Worth investing in after your core S-tier team is established.

Schuyler

A Tier · Aircraft · Attack

Control-focused attacker who deals 309% damage to multiple enemies with built-in stun capability. Schuyler disrupts enemy formations in PvP and provides strong crowd control that pairs well with DVA's burst damage. Best for Aircraft-focused teams looking for a secondary DPS with utility. (Confidence: HIGH — A-S across sources)

Carlie

A Tier · Aircraft · Defense

The only Aircraft-class tank in Last War, filling a unique defensive niche. Carlie provides frontline protection for Aircraft formations that would otherwise lack survivability. Essential if you're committed to an Aircraft composition — without Carlie, your DPS heroes get shredded before they can output damage. (Confidence: HIGH — A-S across sources)

Lucius

A Tier · Aircraft · Defense

Balanced defensive Aircraft hero with solid utility. Pairs well with Carlie to create a defensive core for Aircraft teams. Good survivability and decent damage output make Lucius a reliable pick, though not as flashy as the S-tier options. (Confidence: MEDIUM — A in most sources)

Morrison

A Tier · Aircraft · Attack

Strong Aircraft attacker ranked SS by Pocket Gamer but A by most other sources. Morrison outputs consistent damage and works well in Aircraft formations. The source disagreement suggests he's formation-dependent — excellent within a full Aircraft team but less impactful in hybrid setups. (Confidence: MEDIUM — rankings vary from SS to A depending on source)

Adam

A Tier · Missile · Defense

Defensive backbone for Missile formations. Adam provides the tanking capability that Missile teams need to protect their damage dealers (Fiona, Tesla). Without a strong Missile defender, your DPS heroes get focused down in PvP. (Confidence: MEDIUM — A-S across sources)

Swift

A Tier · Missile · Attack

Secondary Missile DPS option behind Fiona and Tesla. Swift provides solid damage output and pairs well in full Missile compositions. A good third damage option for Missile teams but not a priority unless you're fully committed to the Missile path. (Confidence: MEDIUM — A-S across sources)

Mason

A Tier · Tank · Attack

The top SSR hero upgradeable to UR rarity. Mason offers strong Tank damage and is accessible to F2P players through consistent farming. A solid investment for players building a Tank team who haven't yet secured Kimberly. (Confidence: HIGH — consistently A-S, recommended as F2P stepping stone)

Scarlett

A Tier · Tank · Attack

Fire-based damage specialist with strong AoE potential. Scarlett's damage over time can be very effective in extended PvE encounters. Rankings vary — some sources place her A tier, others B tier — suggesting she's meta-dependent and currently in a decent spot. (Confidence: MEDIUM — A in some sources, B in others)

B Tier — Situational Picks

These heroes have niche uses but shouldn’t be primary investments. Use them as fillers while building toward A and S tier.

Jackson

B Tier · Tank

Moderate tank with limited utility compared to Williams and Murphy. Usable as a temporary frontliner but should be replaced as better options become available.

Violet

B Tier · Tank · Defense

Poison-based abilities provide some unique utility, but overall output falls behind the A-tier tanks. Situationally useful in extended PvE battles where poison damage can stack.

Stetmann

B Tier · Tank · Attack

Rated S-tier in PvP by some sources but significantly weaker in PvE and alliance content. If you primarily play PvP arena modes, Stetmann can punch above his weight. Otherwise, invest elsewhere.

McGregor

B Tier · Missile · Defense

Taunt mechanic is a double-edged sword — it draws fire away from teammates but can also get McGregor killed quickly if not properly supported. Risky pick that requires specific team compositions to work.

Venom

B Tier · Missile · Attack

Poison damage-over-time specialist recently promoted to UR rarity in Season 5. The UR upgrade improves Venom's viability, but he still trails behind Fiona and Tesla for Missile DPS. Worth watching as the Season 5 meta develops — may move up to A tier if poison builds become more viable.

ℹ️ NOTE: Venom’s Season 5 UR Promotion Venom received a UR upgrade during Season 5 (Weeks 3-7). This is a significant power increase that may shift his ranking upward as more players test the upgraded version. If you’re on a server approaching Week 3, consider holding off on investing in other Missile DPS until you can evaluate UR Venom.

Resources invested in C-tier heroes are generally wasted. These heroes are outclassed and will be replaced quickly as you progress.

Heroes in this tier include: Emma, Lily, Noah, Sophia, Ethan, Ava, Lucas, Isabella, Farhad, Gump, Loki, Maxwell, Ambolt, Blaz, Kane, Monica, Richard, Cage, Elsa.

Most C-tier heroes are SR rarity and serve as early-game placeholders. Don’t invest skill materials or enhancement resources into them — save everything for your A and S tier heroes.

⚠️ WARNING: The SR Hero Trap New players often level up SR heroes because they’re available first. This wastes resources you’ll desperately need later. Focus on your UR heroes from day one, even if they’re weaker initially. The long-term payoff is enormous.

Which Formation Should You Choose?

This is the most important decision you’ll make in Last War, and it’s permanent (in terms of resource investment).

Core heroes: Kimberly, Williams, Murphy, Marshall + 1 flex (Mason or Scarlett)

Tank formations have dominated the meta for over 6 months due to:

  • 85% higher survival rates in extended battles
  • 60% greater resource efficiency from lower troop losses
  • 95% success rate for beginners due to forgiving gameplay
  • Superior performance in PvE and zombie content

Tanks are the safest investment. Even if the meta shifts, tank durability and the 20% stat bonus keep them competitive. Most guides recommend Tank for your first formation.

Missile Formation

Core heroes: Fiona, Tesla, Swift, Adam + Marshall or another Missile hero

Missile formations counter Tanks (the most popular formation), giving you a natural advantage in PvP against the majority of opponents. Strong burst damage but less forgiving — positioning and timing matter more than with Tanks.

Aircraft Formation

Core heroes: DVA, Schuyler, Carlie, Lucius + Morrison or Marshall

Aircraft teams offer the highest ceiling burst damage but are the hardest to play. They counter Missiles but lose to Tanks, which are everywhere. Recommended only for experienced players who understand the matchup system.

F2P Hero Priority: Who to Invest in First

If you’re free-to-play, your resources are limited and every choice matters. Here’s the exact order:

  1. Murphy — Your first UR hero, free, and competitive at every stage
  2. Williams — Essential for keeping your team alive through harder content
  3. Marshall — His support buffs multiply your entire team’s damage
  4. Mason — Best SSR-to-UR upgrade path for F2P Tank players
  5. Kimberly — Chase her through events and selective spending — she’s the endgame DPS

For Missile F2P players: Murphy → Adam → Fiona (event drops) → Tesla For Aircraft F2P players: Murphy → Carlie → DVA (event drops) → Schuyler

F2P hero investment roadmap Follow this path for the most efficient F2P hero progression

💡 PRO TIP: Don’t Skip Marshall Even if you’re running a full single-type formation, Marshall’s support value is worth the slight reduction in formation bonus. The 4+1 hybrid (4 same-type + Marshall) is the most efficient setup for 90% of players. The ~35% formation power you retain is more than compensated by Marshall’s attack amplification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Kimberly the best hero in Last War Survival?

Kimberly is the best damage dealer and the top priority for Tank formations. However, “best hero” depends on your needs — Williams provides more value defensively, and Marshall is the only support option. For pure damage output, yes, Kimberly is number one.

Should I invest in Venom after the Season 5 UR upgrade?

It’s too early to say definitively. Venom’s UR promotion during Season 5 (Weeks 3-7) is a significant power increase, but he still needs testing against established Missile DPS heroes like Fiona and Tesla. Wait for community data before committing major resources.

What’s more important — hero tier or formation synergy?

Formation synergy, by a significant margin. A full 5-Tank team of A-tier heroes will outperform a mixed team of S-tier heroes due to the ~44% formation bonus. Always prioritize completing your formation before chasing higher-tier heroes that don’t fit.

How often does the tier list change?

Major shifts happen with new hero releases and seasonal updates (roughly every 2-3 months). Minor adjustments occur when balance patches change skill values. We update this list monthly and flag any meta shifts in our Season guides.

Which hero should a complete beginner focus on first?

Murphy. He’s free, he’s UR rarity, and he’s competitive at every stage of the game. Build your team around Murphy as your first tank, then add Williams and Marshall as you acquire them.

ℹ️ NOTE: Source Agreement The top 6 heroes (Kimberly, Fiona, DVA, Tesla, Williams, Marshall) are consistently ranked S-SS tier across all five sources with minor positional differences. The A-tier is where sources diverge most — Morrison ranges from SS (Pocket Gamer) to A (Handbook), and Williams ranges from S (most) to B (MedievalFun).
